Our Story

The Fathering Project began with a simple but powerful belief: Children thrive, socially, emotionally, physically and academically, when fathers and father figures are positively engaged in their lives.

Our story started with Dr Bruce Robinson, a lung specialist who saw firsthand how a child’s wellbeing, mental health, and lifelong outcomes are shaped by supportive, present father figures.

His conversations with dads revealed a clear truth — many wanted to be more involved, but didn’t always know how, or didn’t feel confident or supported.

So, in 2014 he started something small.

A group conversation.
A message of encouragement.
A space where dads could feel connected rather than alone.

That small beginning grew — conversation by conversation — into a national movement.

How We Grew into a National Impact Organisation

What began as community gatherings has evolved into a leading Australian charity offering:

  • Positive father engagement programs in schools
  • Support programs for dads and father figures across communities
  • Placed-based services and case management support for fathers
  • Family partnership programs for stronger relationships
  • Practical, easy-to-use information resources for fathers
  • Early intervention and prevention initiatives
  • Evidence-based education, research, and advocacy

Today, we work with schools, community groups, workplaces, local healthcare providers and services, government agencies and families across Australia, helping create safe, supportive environments where children can grow emotionally, socially, and mentally.

Our programs are not about “perfect parenting.”
They’re about connection, encouragement, and small moments that make a big difference for fathers and children.

Why Father Engagement Matters

Every step of our journey has been guided by the research — and by thousands of lived experiences — showing that positive father engagement:

  • Strengthens children’s mental health and resilience
  • Improves behaviour, learning, and emotional wellbeing
  • Reduces risk factors and builds protective factors
  • Helps break the cycle of disadvantage
  • Increases family connection and stability

This is why our work focuses on accessible support programs for dads, practical parenting tools, and community-based approaches that help families feel connected, supported, and understood.

Looking Ahead

As we continue to grow, our focus remains clear:

  • Support fathers and father figures to be present, confident, and positively engaged
  • Strengthen family relationships and child wellbeing
  • Partner with schools and communities to create safe, supportive environments where children thrive
  • Deliver early prevention and intervention programs that break cycles of disadvantage and build resilience in fathers, children and families.

We’re here to walk alongside dads and families — offering support, encouragement, and community, one small step at a time.
