Encourage awareness of surroundings

Challenge your children to always be aware of their surroundings – this can encourage curiosity about the world, as well as being a valuable skill if they are ever lost or in danger.

  • When you are out somewhere with your children, test them to see what they have noticed about the location, the people, the food, etc
  • Encourage the children to use all their senses – not just what they can see, but what they can hear, touch, smell and even taste
  • Make up games (even “I Spy” works) to encourage even very young children to notice things

Tips:

Kids in high school

Talk with your high-schooler about school - not just what they are learning but also their friends, teachers, sport, etc.

Tips:

Link up with other FIFO families

If you do FIFO work, find other FIFO families in your area to share experiences and to give and receive support.
