Encourage awareness of surroundings

Challenge your children to always be aware of their surroundings – this can encourage curiosity about the world, as well as being a valuable skill if they are ever lost or in danger.

  • When you are out somewhere with your children, test them to see what they have noticed about the location, the people, the food, etc
  • Encourage the children to use all their senses – not just what they can see, but what they can hear, touch, smell and even taste
  • Make up games (even “I Spy” works) to encourage even very young children to notice things

Activities:

Watch the clouds

Lie out in the backyard with your child and identify shapes and characters in the clouds.

Tips:

Make it a habit

If you can, aim to spend a few minutes one-on-one with each of your children every day.
