Stay connected during the day

Having a job that takes you away from home for a large part of the day need not mean you lose touch with your children. Here are tips on staying connected.

  • Make sure your children have access to you at work
  • Make ‘holes in your day’ to get to their school for events, eg assemblies, sports and music
  • Do some school canteen duties
  • Occasionally leave notes in their lunch boxes

Activities:

Build a model together

If you work away from home, travel a lot, or don't see your children often due to access limitations, here's an activity to try: spend time with your child when you are together building something.

Tips:

Share interesting facts about where you are working or living

Get to know more about where you are working or living, and share this information with your children. History, geography, politics, or many other aspects of a location can be investigated – maybe ask your child what they would like you to find out!
